Mena, AM :: El Ajiaco
Coleman Page Music presents 'El Ajiaco' for woodwind quintet by composer Alyssa Mercedes Mena.
The composer writes about this piece, ''El Ajiaco' refers to a traditional Latin American soup that varies from country to country. Cuban, Colombian, Peruvian versions each use different ingredients and spices. In this piece, I imagined myself as a musical chef, blending the distinct flavors of our cultures into one communal dish.
'Throughout the piece, each instrument alternated between soloist and rhythmic partner. Distinct sections overlap and blend like flavors simmering in a pot of ajiaco. The result is a musical celebration of heritage, identity, and community- something uniquely ours, yet deeply universal.
''El Ajiaco' is a celebration of cultural identity, musical exchange, and the joy of creating something greater together.'
