Aaron Avshalomov presents his 1948 Flute Concerto, in a reduction for flute and piano.
Though Avshalomov spent his first 20 years in Siberia (and studied at the Stern School of Music in Zurich), he fled south through China during the Revolution of 1917 and established a book shop there before finally settling in San Francisco in 1947. His music is thus full of deeply Chinese and Russian idioms, though later tempered by the strong current of Americana prevalent at the time.
The Flute Concerto is a prime example of his particular language; the quasi-Chinese melodies welded with Russian orchestration and flavor create an engaging, light texture, with memorable moments and frequent color changes. In three movements - a large-scale Andante, a central espressivo, and a brisk finale - two cadenzas, and plenty of melody and virtuoso passagework, the Avshalomov is an excellent lesser-known concert and competition piece.
