Sonata in c
Bach, JJ

This sonata, which is published here for the first time, has come down to us through an early 18th-century manuscript score kept at the Bibliotheca Furstenbergiana in Schloss Herdringen. The title page identifies the composer as 'Signor Bach,' but unfortunately there is no indication of his forenames.

One would probably not be mistaken in assuming that the composer was a relation of Johann Sebastian Bach. There are several reasons for believing that the composer was probably Johann Sebastian's brother Johann Jocab Bach, his elder by three years, who had been trained as a town musician in Eisenach. The Sonatas by 'Signor Bach' kept at Herdringen, mostly intended for flute and continuo, date to all appearances from the years soon after 1710, and they seem to be the work of a professional instrumentalist, who probably wrote them primarily for his own use and who as a composer was clearly more of a dilettante.

Includes full score with realized keyboard, a solo part, and an additional basso continuo part.
