Never Enough of Bach
Bach, JS
Bach's sonatas and suites composed for solo violin and solo cello have roused the imagination of flutists for a long time. The rich polyphony inherent in these works, however, makes it impossible to adapt them faithfully for the flute. In addition, the range compels us to make further compromises. It would be hard to find one among these pieces that could be played on the flute in its complete form in the original key (or even transposed up a certain interval) without greater loss. Fugues especially would protest wildly against such an artificial transcription. There are, however, certain movements that decidedly tempt flutists, so the obvious solution is to take appropriate excerpts from various compositions and assemble a solo work which can hold its own in the flute repertoire, sounds natural on the flute, and will hopefully not disappoint even those who listen to the new version with a thorough knowledge of the originals.
