Béla Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances are an expression of his pioneering work in ethnomusicology, in particular the folk music of Eastern Europe. Composed initially for piano in 1915 and orchestrated in 1917, these six short pieces are direct transcriptions and arrangements of authentic Romanian folk tunes that Bartók collected during his research trips through Transylvania at the turn of the 20th century. Bartok imbues these melodies with his unique harmonic language and rhythmic vitality.
