Pierre-Philippe Bauzin's Concerto opus 22, here presented in a reduction for flute and piano, is one of the few remaining extant Bauzin pieces - most of the rest being lost to time. Curious, for its dedicatee Rampal recorded it for the French Radio and, by all accounts, regarded it very highly.
Bauzin's language is playfully French, and his acerbic sense of wit comes to the forefront in the first and last movements - the Allegro Vivace and the Finale leggiero. It is the 10-minute central Adagio, however, that grounds the Concerto. Opening with a slow, delicate melody, the Adagio soon blooms into a virtuosic masterwork with an enormous central cadenza.
