Bennett, RR :: A Dry Weather Legend (in B-flat)
Bennett, Robert Russell
Robert Russell Bennett's A Dry Weather Legend (in bb) for flute and band, in a reduction for flute and piano.
This work is based upon the 'water-well' version of The Tar Baby, a West Virginia folk legend.
According to the legend, Br'er Rabbit, who refused to help dig the water well in time of drought, was refused by the other animals refreshment at the well, and the Tar Baby was placed on guard to keep him away. Becoming angry at the silent sentinel, Br'er Rabbit cuffed and kicked the little Tar Baby, eventually becoming hopelessly entangled in the sticky tar. After frustrating many attempts by the animals to chastise him, Br'er Rabbit finally tricks an escape, unharmed as usual.
