Sonate opus 78

Bourrel, Y

Yvon Bourrel, a student of Darius Milhaud and Jean Rivier, was somewhat ostracized from the mid-20th Century classical community for his thickly tonal works. We might place Bourrel as a musical descendant of Faure and Chabrier - romantic impressionism, but with contemporary harmonic flavours threaded throughout his music. His output covers nearly all genres, excepting opera; today, however, he is known primarily for his saxophone sonata.

The Sonata for Flute, op. 78, is written in three movements. The first is a deeply playful, deeply French work - melodies are extended and extended, with plenty of chromaticism and an engaging rhythmic vitality. The second movement, Calme, lets the flute drift in gorgeous melodic slowness over the dark waters of the piano. The third movement is a playful Anime in 3/8 that brings the work to an accelerating close.

Duration: 12:00. For advanced players.
