Paul Brantley presents the Swevens Sonata in three movements for flute and piano.
Swevens is a beautiful Middle English word that lies somewhere in the field of sleep, dream or vision, but is its own phenomenon; a psychic value that has apparently been lost - along with its use and precise understanding. In The House of Fame, Chaucer ponders:
"Why that is an avision
And why this a revelacion,
Why this is a drem, why that a sweven"
Each of the three movements, though distinct in character, are a mix of neo-romantic and open contemporary harmony in tone; drifting melodies and lovely melodic fragments brush against each other in constantly-shifting, attractive textures.
