Sama'i is an Oriental sound-word which in its many different meanings cold be translated in English as 'to listen.' In various cultures in the Orient it also means the 'divine' between lovers, and in some cultures, especially in those bordering the North African continent, the sama'i is even an elaborate art form.
The five separate movements are all related and based on the same 'idea': that of meditation and ritual. Hardly any exact repetition is to be found in the whole piece although the same material is manipulated all the time - with the technique of 'deviation' rather than 'variation.'
