The composer writes about this piece, 'Evoking the sun-drenched Caribbean through playful melodies for flute, alto flute, piccolo and bassoon, and with driving rhythms performed on traditional Central and South American percussion instruments, 'A Samba for Sam' invites the listener to conjure up images of cerulean sky, azure water, and golden sand. Originally composed in 2008, this edition appears after an extensive rewrite and in consultation and collaboration with flutist Samantha Donnell. While requiring virtuosic technique and serious musicianship for the players, 'A Samba for Sam' in unrelentingly happy and doesn't take itself too seriously. Just like Sam.'
