La belle epoque
Casterede, J
From the collection of Jean-Louis Beaumadier, Jacques Casterede’s ‘La Belle epoque’ Fantaisie de concert en forme e quadrille (The Good Times, Concert Fantasy in the form of a Square Dance) for piccolo, or flute, and piano is an advanced concert piece. The collection states, ‘The Quadrille was a popular ballroom dance in France, especially during the Second Empire. It was usually danced by sets of four couples, and consisted of several distinct figures. The main figures were Pantalon, Ete, Poule and Galop.’
Approximately eight minutes in length, this piece is advanced, requiring the utmost control in all registers, embouchure flexibility, clean articulation, and breath support, as well as exceptional technical facility. The phrases are long, delightful and lyrical. ‘La Belle epoque’ is a perfect addition for any flutist’s library. Casterede is a beloved 20th century prolific French composer and pianist.
