Coleman, V :: Matisseries
Coleman Page Music presents 'Matisseries' for solo flute by composer Valerie Coleman.
Valerie Coleman’s 'Matisseries' explores five pieces of artwork within two distinct periods of French artist, Henri Matisse's artistic output. Each movement is short in length but brims with energy, nuance, and character. In 1920's Nice, France, Matisse spent much of his time painting interpretations of the female body; specifically of odalisques. Caprices I and II are named after two such odalisque paintings, featuring women lounging in dramatic poses against vibrant backdrops. Coleman’s correlating caprices are rich in color and intrigue, matching the drama of Matisse’s posed models.
Near the end of his life, Matisse’s primary artistic output shifted to cut-outs – striking images formed with cut paper of varying shapes, sizes, and colors. Caprices III, IV, and V are inspired by cutouts of stained glass and energetic dancers.
