Ernest Bloch s 1950 Concertino for flute, viola (or clarinet), and string orchestra (or piano), is a light-hearted divertissement intended for the young musicians at the Juilliard School.
The Concertino opens Allegro Commodo, notable for its contrast between mildly dissonant chords in the strings, reminiscent of guitar strumming, and the idyllic, flowing melody first presented in the solo viola and then the solo flute. In binary form, the second part is a modified restatement of the opening theme.
