da Motta, JV :: Grande Sonate, Op. 49
Publisher: Scherzo Editions
Editor: Vidinha, Joao
Scherzo Editions presents 'Grande Sonate, Op. 49' for flute and piano by composer Jose Vianna da Motta, transcribed by Joao Vidinha.
Jose Vianna da Motta holds such a prominent place in the history of Portuguese music that, even among those who are unaware of the details of his work, his name resonates as part of the cultural imagination. This is indeed a 'great sonata' in terms of its length. The frequent use of octaves in the piano seems to express a desire to fill the sound mass, and its harmonic structure already reveals dissonant challenges in a very pianistic line that follows the melody of the flute. The repetitive motifs emphasize the dialogue between flute and piano, during a first majestic movement, a deeply tender second part, and a livelier final section. These changing soundscapes throughout the sonata will surely bring pleasure to those who play it, both for its expressive richness and for the technical and artistic demands that make its performance a rewarding experience for the musicians.
