The Serenade is Ingolf Dahl's entrant into the realm of flute quartets - a strange, varied realm where melodies flit and fly, and cool harmonies never descend below the soprano.
Dahl is particularly known for his contemporary language with a strong rooting in semi-traditional melody, and the Serenade is no exception. The Serenade, for four C flutes, is presented in five movements - a twisted, playful march, a cadenza featuring all four flutes, a contemporary canon, an idyllic quasi-pastoral in shifting time signatures, and a return to the opening march.
