With the Trio for flute, viola, and harp, Jean-Michel Damase departs from his usual thick Impressionistic shimmers for more delicate, intimate writing.
The harp opens the first movement with a quiet ostinato and melody, picked up in canon by the viola, before developing into high, delicate languages and ideas, with virtuosic harp writing underscoring the rest of the movement. The second movement, with its fan-shaped structure - from quiet to climax to quiet - explores more of that canonic writing, and the third movement, with Damase's distinctly French sensitivity and quickness of line, explores soft moving lines, ending in a brisk finale.
