Damase, J-M :: Trio pour flute, hautbois et piano
Damase, J-M
Though Damase is best known for his flowing lines and quasi-Impressionistic language, the Trio for flute, oboe, and piano opens on quite a different note, more reminiscent of Griffes' orchestral tone poem Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan - dark, plaintive strains filter back and forth between flute and oboe, with a thick piano ostinato underneath. Though the rest of that first movement grows into a more flowing conversation - as do the remaining two movements - they never quite lose that deep, dark strain, even as the second movement develops into an Allegro con spirito and the third into an allegros scherzando.
