The composer writes about this piece: In 'Piano Rolls Flute,' a player-piano (pianola), weary of being forced to play its old piano-rolls – a nostalgic Tango and a laid-back Paraguayan Guarania – begins to 'invent' its own music. Meanwhile, a flutist playing along tries to keep pace, grappling with the unfolding performance. As the piece progresses, the piano seizes control, leading the flutist to conclude the work with a joyful, fast-paced Latin dance.'
