This imagined courtship begins with a night on the town and ends with an unsettling leaving (punctuated with brief reflection of what just was). In between, the lovers embrace through three movements.
Uptown - Bop: Written with a bebop feel, developed almost exclusively around three jazz chords.
Pas de deux - A rhythmically free dance. The long-lined, dolce and legato melody is supported by a jazzy polychordal accompaniment.
R.E.M. Agitato: Rapid Eye Movement is the dream state in which dreams take place. The first part of this movements exploits a driving, almost hypnotic rock-derived rhythm. the free cantabile second section is brought back to the opening material to close the piece with an unsettling return to consciousness.
