Louis Anthony deLise presents Red Lotus for flute, violin, cello, and piano.
Red Lotus is in a style that freely combines musical gestures from several disparate styles including twenty-first century concert music, American rock and roll, American jazz, and Bach-inspired chorale passages. This kind of musical mosaic is what the American composer, George Rochberg, called ars combinatorial.
The first movement, Come un ballo, is a gentle dance touched with tender elegance in a sort of stylized pastorale. The second movement, Adagio e liberamente, uses the piano to imitate percussive sounds paired with melodic fragments from the other instruments, with chorale-like interruptions from the ensemble. The final movement is an energetic and rhapsodic waltz in 5/8 meter, with lush harmonies and insistent rhythms.
