Diemer, EL :: Concerto
Diemer, EL
Neoclassical yet distinctly American, Emma Lou Diemer's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra combines the best of both worlds - open intervals, playful rhythms, and charming forwardness merge with clear textures and flowing lines in this three-movement work, with a full cadenza in the first movement and a triumphant finale. This work is representative of a 'middle style' of the composer, displaying less complexity than her later works, but offering an opportunity for the unique purity and fluidity of the solo flute sound to flourish in a generally sympathetic and enhancing surrounding. The soloist in this piano reduction is called upon to display a fairly traditional virtuosic technique: rapid legato passage work; rhythmic, detached, and precise patterns of movement; and lyrical lines.
Flute and piano reduction. For advanced intermediate players.
