Paquito D'Rivera's Gran Danzon for flute and orchestra (subtitle: The Bel-Air Concerto) is based heavily in Cuban dance music and the Cuban dance orchestra. Written for Marina Piccinini and full of stylistic flourishes, virtuosic writing, and playful melodies in its single movement, the Gran Danzon concerto embodies the spirit of the Cuban flute within the sound of the Western concert concerto.
