Temps Variable or ' Unsettled Weather' by Sophie Dufeutrelle is written for a minimum of 6 flutes with no limit of total flutists. Using extended techniques, trills, jet whistles and similar effects, this piece is easily accessible to even the earliest beginner though it is advised to have a good mix of beginning and more experienced players for guidance. Depicting various aspects of the weather like the 'blue sky' and 'blustery wind' this piece is notated pictorially. It is not written on a staff, but rather pictures are on the page with symbols illustrating what effects to play at certain points in the piece.
This composition gives the conductor complete freedom with timing and how to structure the tempo and pacing of each movement. Demonstrative gestures are encouraged to help paint the imagery depicted.
