Elgar completed this pair of pieces, originally for Violin and Piano, shortly after his 'Enigma Variations'. 'Chanson De Nuit' begins and ends with a rich tune from the Alto Flute, using its full range, before the C flutes take up the tunes in the middle section. The possibly more famous 'Chanson De Matin' is lighter in mood, with the whole quartet enjoying moments of light and shade. A perfect pair of pieces for a recital.
