Enesco, G :: Cantabile Et Presto
Cantabile Et Presto
Enesco, G
Georges Enesco presents Cantabile et Presto, for flute and piano.
'A child prodigy of formidable talent, the Rumanian violinist George Enescu followed in the footsteps of many violin virtuosi before him to Paris, adopting the Francophile spelling of his name along the way: George Enesco. His musical career quickly took off, pitting his love for the violin and his new-found passion for composition against each other. As a concert violinist, conductor and teacher he worked throughout Europe, composing as he had the time.
The Cantabile et Presto, composed for the 1904 concours, speaks to Enesco s sensibilities as a violinist and as a composer who favors the interplay of lines rather than complexes of harmony. The opening slow Cantabile draws on a the breadth and warmth of low register tones: the melody is simple and unassuming. Soon the Presto is announced and the music is off, now propelled by the double ricochet of repeated notes so characteristic of bravura violin playing.'
