Falik, Y :: Chamber Concerto
Falik, Y
The music of one of the most famous composers in St. Petersburg, Yuri Falik (1936 2009), has long stepped over the borders of his hometown and is performed worldwide. The chamber concert, one of the most characteristic compositions of his style, presents us as a consistent adherent of the Leningrad-St. Petersburg composer school, which is most clearly concentrated in D. Shostakovich s musical heritage. To some extent, this continuity is noticeable in the creative style of Yuri Falik, especially in the present chamber concert.
This spacious and technically difficult composition for flute doubling alto flute and piccolo and orchestra (here with a reduction from orchestra to piano) is designed for an experienced musician and consists of four parts - Pastoral, Burlesque, Chorus and Toccata - corresponding to the classical 4-part symphonic cycle. This is not the only feature that allows us to call this composition a 'chamber symphony' for three flutes and an orchestra - in favor of this description is the complex and rich internal content of the work.
