Poeme
Fibich, Z

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and Antonin Dvorak. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made equally important contributions to the emerging Czech national style with his wide range of compositions.

The Poeme holds its origins in Fibich's collection Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences, containing 376 piano pieces as a sort of 'piano diary' on his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzova. The second subject in the Poeme is pulled from No. 139, and beginning in 1908 the violinist Jan Kubelik brought the easy charm of the Poeme in to public light with frequent, popular performances and encores.

This arrangement of Fibich's Poeme, for flute and piano, is based on the full orchestral version.
