Marius Flothuis, known by flutists for his popular cadenzas for the Mozart flute concertos and the flute and harp concerto, here presents two small pieces for solo flute.
The Aubade Op 19a, an extract from his 1944 Flute Concerto (unpublished), is a dark, slithering construction on f minor somewhat reminiscent of Debussy s Syrinx. The Piccolo Fantasia (Small Fantasy) op 27 is more free-form, with alternating lento, decisive, and cadenza-like sections.
