John Fonville presents Mong Songs for two flutes.
The three duets that make up the Mong Songs are a result of Fonville's collaboration with Ann LaBerge. Mong is the root word for mongrel, and in a sense these duets are indeed hybrids. The unusual fingerings and tunings alter the timbre in unexpected ways and, in so doing, add new dimensions to the compositional references.
The first duet, F-19, uses a 19-note scale; the second, S.P. Hybrid, superimposes two non-Western scales; and the third duet, .5, uses quarter-tone fingerings and flute idiomatic fingerings.
