The composer writes about this piece, ''Solitary the Thrush' was inspired by Walt Whitman's epic elegy 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd.' I first encountered Walt Whitman's masterwork while a student at Juilliard. It struck me like a thunderbolt; the reclusive hermit thrush would someday become the inspiration for my eventual flute concerto.
''Solitary the Thrush (Concerto for Flute and Orchestra) is cast in one continuous, four section movement and features both solo C flute and solo alto flute. The solo flutist serves as a sorcerer who wields enchanting powers over the players of the orchestra to create and shape the musical dialectic and to divine hidden meaning in the musical episodes.'
