Zen-On Music presents Norio Fukushi's A Seagull Circles Over The Cape And... for flute and harp. Premiered in 2014 in Tokyo, this 21st century piece utilizes multiple extended techniques for both the flutist and the harpist. At an extraordinarily slow tempo of quarter=42-44, Fukushi employs changing meters nearly every measure, alternating between 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, and 6/4 seemingly at random. Using nearly every extended technique for flute at our disposal, a confident understanding of these contemporary techniques is necessary as well as confidence in rhythm and counting; it will be tricky but fulfilling to accurately place the rhythms in the flute part to the rhythms of the accompanying harp.
