Moritz Furstenau presents La Concorde (Introduction and Rondo Brillante on Themes from the opera 'La Vestale') for flute, clarinet, and orchestra, here presented in a reduction for flute, clarinet, and piano.
Though pieces for flute, clarinet, and orchestra are particularly unusual, when they arise they are often something very special - as Saint-Saens and Herbert can attest to. La Concorde is no exception. Though it takes the form of the popular opera paraphrases of the time, it does not use virtuosity for virtuosity's sake - there is real musical meat here, worthy and engaging. Gorgeous melodies twine between the two melody instruments, offset by cadenzas and clever variational flourishes.
