As in so many of my works, Derelict was an opportunity to conquer the HIV virus. The work is divided into three sections. The first section is constructed using a seven note set of pitches that represents the HIV virus; the general characteristics of the opening section are that the music is very aggressive and uses extreme registers of the flute. The second section contrasts with the first using more melodic material that is very serene, even delicate. In the third and final section, there is a struggle between the musical material used in the first two sections. Ultimately, the opening set of pitches is torn apart by the musical material of the second section, making the opening pitch set derelict .
I composed Derelict in 1989 to exploit my own technique as a flutist. A number of extended techniques are used such as harmonics, flutter-tonguing, and most notable, slap tonguing.
