Theodore Presser presents 'When We Used to Dance: A Waltz for Flute and Piano' by Nikka Gershman.
The composer writes about this piece, 'In 2023, I sat down at the piano and began improvising an unaccompanied melody, and from a few phrases, 'When We Used to Dance' was born.' The piece is a dialogue between the flute and piano, two dancers who join hands from the operatic introduction to the virtuosic waltz, which includes a surprises jazz swing in the accompaniment; but by the end, their dance is only a memory. Even when the dancers come together, there is a sense of profound longing that permeates throughout, and I invite all the performers to weave their yearning into the notes.'
