Fujikura, D :: Glacier
Dai Fujikura's Glacier, for bass flute alone, could be considered a subterranean twenty-first century answer to Debussy's Syrinx (Sequenza 21 review, Judah Adashi) - though perhaps it might be safer to say it's a reply to Density 21.5, given its deeply idiomatic writing for the instrument. Either way, it stands as a core contemporary work for bass flute. Thick, rattling multiphonics develop out of single tones, matched by fragments of chilly melody and fluttering wind sounds.
