Lita Grier's Sonata for flute and piano, in three movements, holds a distinct American flavor in its neoclassical trappings (though echoes of Poulenc and Milhaud certainly appear in the jazz-francaise vein of harmony that occasionally flashes its colors). Composed while Grier was just 19, the sonata was nonetheless described by Julius Baker as 'a new classic in the standard flute repertory.'
