Griffes, CT :: Poem
G. Schirmer presents 'Poem for flute and orchestra' by Charles Griffes, edited by Georges Barrere.
Almost all of Griffes' orchestral scores are linked in some way to poetic or literal ideas, but in this case, despite its title, the composer said the piece was simply a miniature tone poem, without associated text or images. The work's lush and alluring timbres have endeared it as a mainstay in the flute repertoire. This edition was transcribed by Georges Barrere, who premiered the work to great acclaim in New York in 1919.
