Poem was first performed in 1919 by the New York Symphony Orchestra with its principal flutist, Georges Barrere, as soloist. It was a great success but its composer, Charles T. Griffes, died less than 6 months later at the age of 35, having already signed a contract for the publication of Poem. The score, however, did not appear in print until 1951.
