Joan Guinjoan's Neuma, for a single flutist playing bass, alto, and flute in c, can be described as journey through the depths of sound.
Neuma opens with an 'ad libitum' first movement for bass flute, with low flutterings and quiet wind sounds that develop into a great - yet still quiet and subdued - low trills and slurred quick movements in the low register.
The second movement, a meditational near-pastorale for alto flute, employs the voice underneath the flute as the piece begins to grow towards the quiet explosions and frantic whispers of the final movement on c flute.
