Owl Glass Music presents 'La brute, c'est Pan' for flute quartet by composer Timothy Hagen.
The composer writes about this piece, 'Martha Long, longtime friend and also Principal Flute of the Oregon Symphony, contacted me in early 2022. She was working with 45th Parallel Universe, an adventurous chamber music collective based in Portland, to curate a concert she entitled 'Brave New World,' which would use the flute as an artistic lens for exploring the dark side of human behavior. Works on the program would address violence in many forms, from sexual to racist to martial to queerphobic. She asked if I would create an 'arrangement' of Syrinx for four flutes as part of this ambitious program, and I immediately agreed. What resulted was less an arrangement, though the melody is always recognizable, and more a kaleidoscopic expansion of the original work, conceptually and sonically. Let us always keep the spirit of Syrinx alive in our hearts.
