Drei Triosonaten [Three Trio Sonatas] op. V/6, V/3, V/2 - HWV 401, 398, 397
Handel, GF

Since hardly any chamber music compositions have come down to us from Handel's later years other than the well-known D major Violin Sonata, these three Trio Sonatas in this edition can be considered as one of Handel's last contributions to the field of instrumental chamber music. Among the works Handel borrowed from in these three Sonatas are the operas Ezio, Il Pastor fido, and Ariodante, as well as two Anthems for Cannons (opening movements of the Sonatas in E minor and D major).

The first edition of these sonatas specifies two violins or flutes as melody instruments for the Op. 5 Sonatas. However, since scoring indications were taken very liberally at that time, it is also perfectly legitimate to play these works in other instrumental combinations (for example, violin and flute).
