Largo 'Obra mai fu' from Xerxes
Handel, GF

Schott's edition of Geroge Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) Largo 'Ombra mai fu' from the opera Xerxes was arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This beautiful aria melody for flute and piano accompaniment includes the score and solo part.

The opera, Xerxes, was reportedly a commercial failure, lasting only five performances in London. However, in the 19th century, this aria was rediscovered and became one of Handel's best-known pieces. Handel adopted the aria from the setting by Giovanni Bononcini, who, in turn, adapted it from the setting by Franceso Cavalli. All three composers had produced settings of the same opera libretto by Nicolo Minato. It was orginally composed to be sun by a soprano castrato and is often arranged for other voice types and instruments, as it has been here for flute and piano.
