Handel, GF :: Sonate G-Dur [Sonata in G major]

The Sonata in G major for flute and basso continuo is taken from a manuscript collection dating from the first half of the 18th century and housed in the Royal Belgian Library, Brussels. While the source seems to be generally reliable, and the style of the sonata at least does not preclude the attribution to Handel, the authenticity of the work is nevertheless not absolutely certain. By publishing a separate edition of the sonata the publisher intends both to make the work accessible to the musical public and to facilitate a discussion of it among Handel scholars. The original copy contains almost no mistakes, but the bass, unfortunately, is entirely unfigured. Accidentals have been adapted to modern practice; the no-longer common notation of the hemiolas in the second movement has been changed. All other additions have been indicated in the score by different print. It need hardly be mentioned that the realization of the bass is merely a suggestion.
