Harrison, L :: First Concerto
Edition Peters presents "First Concerto for Flute and Percussion" by Lou Harrison.
Lou Harrison is particularly recognized for his work with just intonation and tuning systems, his eclectic synthesis of culturally-diverse music, and his percussion music. The First Concerto, for flute and percussion, is of particular note; though an early Harrison work it already illustrates the simple yet quasi-lyrical textures he creates with percussive rhythms, and the flute line integrates multiple Eastern ideas across the three movements. The third movement is of particular rhythmic interest with shifting time signatures in 4, 6, 3, and 5.
Duration: 10'.
Instrumentation: Flute solo and two percussionists (set includes three scores for performance). One percussionist may cover both parts with adequate preparation time.
First player: Tortoise shell or large temple-block. Tin can rattle or tambourines, rattles only. 3 graduated gongs. Rasp or guiro.
Second player: 3 graduated drums. Large bell. Inverted large brass bowl (hemispherical Chinese brass bowl, upside down, giving a melodious 'ping').
