Divertimento was written for flutist Katherine Kemler and violist Matthew Daline. The first movement, Canray's Dream, is an homage to the great Louisiana Creole fiddler, Canray Fontenot (1922-1995).
The second movement, Variations, consists of a them and three short variations. In the opening theme the violist holds the instrument like a guitar and strums the strings. Variation 1 is for flute alone, and Variation 2 is for viola alone. the final variation is played by both instruments without vibrato.
The finale, Cajun Riviera, make use of some Cajun fiddling techniques along with clashing polyrhythms between the two instruments.
