Haydn, J :: Quartet, Op. 77, No. 1 - 'The Courtesies'
Quartet, Op. 77, No. 1 - 'The Courtesies'
Haydn, J
The purpose of this transcription is to give flute quartets a chance to perform a work by one of the major composers from the classical period, Joseph Haydn. During this period a standing professional flute quartet was unheard of, but today flute quartets, both professional and amateur, are forming on a daily basis. Although more and more such ensembles are using the bass flute, that instrument is still not available universally to flute groups. This transcription affords the many quartets that don't have a bass flute the opportunity to play music by one of the masters. The alto flute, used in this transcription, has gained such prominence that, unlike the bass flute, it is used routinely by flute quartets. Until the bass flute is available to all groups, this transcription is offered to fill that void. It is hoped, however, that quartets with a bass flute will also accept this transcription and add it to their repertoire.
