This Haydn quartet for flute and string is a later arrangement of the string quartet Op. 20 No. 5 (Hob.III. 35), belonging to the group of six 'Sun Quartets' from the year 1774. Arrangements of string quartets into flute quartets were not unusual in the 19th century. given rise to by the growing scarcity of literature for original flute quartets after the high popularity of the flute quartet during the second half of the 18th Century. This arrangement was made in a strikingly sensitive and sensible manner by an unknown editor.
