Paavo Heineken, with his (earned) reputation for Finland s doughtiest modernist , here sets aside his love of difficult music to create a tongue-in-cheek portrayal of what a late-Romantic Finnish Flute Concerto might sound like. Relaxed in atmosphere, with tonal harmonies and vivid melody (though neither always conventional), Autrefois ( Yesteryears ) contains three movements that explore a full range of musical emotion: I - Scherzo & Elegia; II - Sonata (a reply to the first movement); and III - Berceuse & Dithyrambos, the central core of the work.
Massive and extensive in scope, Autrefois is for only the advanced player.
