Herbert, V :: L'Encore
Herbert, V
Though Victor Herbert is more famously known for his operettas - the most famous of which, Babes in Toyland, still enjoys numerous performances and extract arrangements a century later - he also composed several exceedingly fine pieces of concert music (notably the Cello Concerto No. 2) that are filled with depth and his signature enormous charm.
L'Encore for flute, clarinet, and orchestra (here arranged for flute, clarinet, and piano) is one such fine composition, despite its mere 2'30 length. The soloists bounce in charmingly ornamented harmony and quick licks of sound - an absolutely perfect concert opener or, yes, encore; extremely accessible and a joy to play.
For advanced players.
